A 74-year-old man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a woman after he claimed he mistook her for a deer while hunting, according to Delaware State Police. Walter Moorhead of Salisbury, Maryland, was arrested following a report of a shooting in the town of Ellendale on Friday evening. Troopers arrived at the scene around 7:40 p.m. and provided initial care to the 39-year-old woman before she was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Santos Maria Chilel Soto of Georgetown, Delaware. According to police, Chilel Soto was walking in an open field with a man and two children when Moorhead, who was hunting from a camouflaged shelter known as a "ground blind," fired at her. Moorhead allegedly believed he was shooting a deer and fired his rifle, which struck Chilel Soto. The incident has raised questions about the circumstances under which the shooting occurred and whether the hunting activity was conducted safely. Moorhead has been charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was released on a $43,000 cash bond, according to state police. When contacted for comment, Moorhead did not respond, and it remains unclear whether he has retained legal representation. The case is under investigation, and authorities are looking into the details surrounding the incident.
