Mercedes delays new engine debut

Mercedes' new engine development, which was set to debut at the United States Grand Prix, will not be ready in time for the Austin race and will instead be introduced at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The delay means the team will have to wait before using its first authorized engine upgrade under the ADUO framework.

ADUO allows performance improvements

Mercedes is using the ADUO system, which permits engine manufacturers with a performance deficit greater than 2% compared to the reference benchmark—currently Red Bull—to make improvements during the season. This system is designed to help teams catch up in performance without breaking the rules.

New engine not ready for Mexico

According to The Race, the new engine will not be available for the Mexican Grand Prix, which follows the U.S. race. Its introduction could now occur at the earliest during the Brazilian Grand Prix, the final race of the three-race series. Mercedes has opted for caution, avoiding the risk of introducing an engine upgrade too early.

Engine penalty for George Russell

The delay in the new engine’s arrival will affect George Russell, who already faces a grid penalty after an engine failure at Sepang. Installing the new power unit will result in another penalty, further impacting his starting position in upcoming races.

Strategic importance of engine development

Despite Mercedes’ strong position in the championship, the engine development remains strategically important. The technical regulations will remain largely unchanged through 2027, meaning improvements made now can directly benefit the next generation of the car. Even with limited competition this season, the data collected will aid future development.

Chassis improvements already underway

Mercedes has already made progress with its chassis, as seen during the Malaysian Grand Prix. At Singapore, the team tested different configurations with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to better understand the car’s performance. These insights will help the team use an improved setup in Austin, while they wait for the next engine upgrade.
