GridCraft's development and features

GridCraft is a free and open-source application developed by ArtCraft, the team behind PhotoCraft and similar tools. It is designed to mimic Microsoft Excel and runs natively on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows, offering a versatile platform for spreadsheet work.

Performance and technical aspects

GridCraft is written in Rust, a programming language known for its efficiency and performance. This contributes to its ability to handle large spreadsheets effectively. It supports native XLSX compatibility, over 500 calculation functions, charts, pivot tables, and features like "copy-on-write" for instant undo and incremental recalculation.

Cross-platform functionality and limitations

The application is noted for its consistent performance across different operating systems. However, it lacks a robust template feature, with only a few examples available. Users can save spreadsheets in CSV format as a workaround, though more advanced template features are expected in future updates.

Current stage and usage caution

GridCraft is still in the alpha stage of development, and users are advised not to rely on it for production environments. While it works well with existing Excel files, including those with pivot tables, users are encouraged to make copies of their work before testing it with GridCraft.

ArtCraft's broader impact

ArtCraft's suite of applications, including WordCraft, DeckCraft, and PDFCraft, is seen as a positive step for open-source software and Linux adoption. However, some applications like FilmCraft may not yet fully replace proprietary tools due to missing features like color grading and node trees.
