Brandon Thomas launches open-source alternatives to Adobe and Microsoft apps, using AI to replicate features of Word, Excel, and AutoCAD.
Open-source alternatives to major software released
Brandon Thomas, founder of ArtCraft in Atlanta, has launched open-source versions of several Adobe and Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and AutoCAD. The software is developed using Rust and with the help of AI models like Claude from Anthropic, and is available for free without requiring subscriptions, telemetry, or user accounts.Software supports multiple platforms and file formats
The applications, named WordCraft, GridCraft, DeckCraft, and CADCraft, support common file formats such as .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx. They are compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, and web browsers, making them accessible across a wide range of devices and operating systems.Project began with Adobe clones and expanded to Microsoft and Autodesk
Thomas initially gained attention in early October with PhotoCraft, LightCraft, and FilmCraft, which were free clones of Adobe's Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere Pro. He has since expanded his project to include Microsoft Office and Autodesk products, with twelve applications now listed on ArtCraft's official website.Applications vary in development stage and feature parity
Each application aims to replicate the functionality of its commercial counterpart, though none have reached the alpha stage. GridCraft, still in pre-alpha, claims to cover about 65% of advanced Excel users' needs, while WordCraft estimates 62% parity with Microsoft Word. CADCraft reports the lowest parity at around 29% with AutoCAD, with no 3D functionality.Thomas defends his approach and productivity claims
Thomas has responded to criticism of his approach, stating on X (formerly Twitter) on October 9, "Mec, je sais coder" ("Dude, I can code"), and explaining that AI allows him to work as an entire company. He claims his productivity is four times that of Google's revenue per employee.Existing free office suites already offer mature alternatives
Existing free office suites like LibreOffice already provide mature alternatives to commercial software. ArtCraft's approach focuses on interfaces closely mirroring the originals and integrating AI agents for control, aiming to offer a more familiar user experience with added AI capabilities.
