ArtCraft targets Microsoft Office

The studio ArtCraft is now aiming to create free alternatives to Microsoft Office, as reported by Clubic on October 14. Its founder, Brandon Thomas, previously worked at Square and led the startup Storyteller.ai. He has developed WordCraft, GridCraft, and DeckCraft—free and open-source software that mimic Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These tools are written in Rust with the help of Claude Opus 5.5, similar to the Adobe clones released earlier in October.

Office software is widely used in business

Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are essential in businesses of all sizes, where file sharing with clients and colleagues is routine. Microsoft offers a 99-euro annual subscription for its Microsoft 365 Personal package, which includes all three applications. ArtCraft’s clones aim to provide similar functionality without the cost, potentially appealing to users seeking free alternatives.

ArtCraft’s focus on Adobe and Microsoft

Brandon Thomas initially focused on Adobe due to his frustration with early termination fees, which he described as unfair. On Reddit, he expressed his dislike for Adobe’s practices. However, his attention has now shifted to Microsoft, aiming to provide free alternatives to its widely used software. Despite this, he acknowledges that his clones are not yet comparable to Microsoft’s offerings.

Progress and limitations of ArtCraft’s software

WordCraft claims to offer 88% of Word’s features, but the team estimates that only 60% of the necessary functionality is mature enough for workplace use. GridCraft, which covers 98% of Excel’s functions, is considered only 50% mature in terms of user needs. DeckCraft is even further behind, with only 80% of its development complete for its first alpha version. These clones are still in early stages and not yet fully functional replacements for their Microsoft counterparts.

AI integration and development plans

ArtCraft’s software is designed to integrate with AI agents through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open protocol that allows AI to control applications without a user interface. WordCraft supports 422 commands through the ribbon, keyboard shortcuts, and MCP. DeckCraft includes over 200 commands that can be triggered by scripts. These features allow AI assistants to perform tasks like filling in budgets or formatting reports automatically, without requiring user input.

Language and file compatibility challenges

ArtCraft’s clones face challenges with language support and file compatibility. WordCraft displays in French but only supports spell checking and grammar correction in English and Polish. GridCraft has limited Spanish language support and uses commas for decimals. File compatibility is also an issue, as the software needs to handle professional .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files without losing formatting or diagrams. These challenges must be resolved before the tools can be widely used in professional settings.
