Volkswagen is encountering difficulties in the Chinese market, where it faces stiff competition from local automakers. Despite its efforts to remain a key player, the company has seen a drop in sales. In response, Volkswagen introduced a new strategy and a range of vehicles at the Beijing auto show in April. One of these new models, the Volkswagen ID. Aura T6, has recently reached dealerships. This electric SUV is designed to appeal to the core of the Chinese market, offering a practical and reasonably priced option starting at 17,200 euros.
The ID. Aura T6 is a mid-sized electric SUV with dimensions of 4.81 meters in length, 1.88 meters in width, and 1.65 meters in height. It features wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 20 inches and has a drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.245, which indicates improved aerodynamics. Inside, the vehicle offers a minimalist and functional design, with a 15.6-inch screen, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a head-up display. It provides ample space with five seats, 576 liters of boot space, and a front trunk (frunk) of 90 liters.
The ID. Aura T6 is built on the CEA platform, which was co-developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. The SUV includes a LiDAR system on the top of the windshield, which allows for autonomous driving features on both city and highway roads, using technology from Horizon Robotics. It offers two battery options: a 59.9 kWh pack with a range of up to 540 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle (approximately 450 km under European WLTP standards), and a 77.5 kWh battery with a range of up to 660 km CLTC (approximately 560 km WLTP). The vehicle can be charged to 80% in 22 minutes.
The ID. Aura T6 starts at 129,900 yuan (around 17,200 euros) with the smaller battery and 139,900 yuan (about 18,500 euros) with the larger battery. It faces competition from models like the Xpeng L03, which is priced at 123,800 yuan with a 550 km CLTC range, and the BYD Atto 3, priced at 119,900 yuan with a 540 km CLTC range and a charging capability of 5 minutes. These rivals offer similar or better features at lower prices, intensifying the challenge for Volkswagen in this competitive market.
