Paul Casey, a British golfer based in Switzerland, lost to South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence in a playoff at the European Masters, held at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans-Montana. The tournament took place at a venue still recovering from a tragic fire on New Year’s Day, which claimed 41 lives and injured 115 people at a local bar. Casey, who had aimed to secure his 16th DP World Tour victory and first since 2021, finished the event at -18, the same score as Lawrence, who won the tournament after a playoff on the fourth hole. Casey has pledged to donate his prize money—$412,500 or €354,734—to the Fondation Beloved, a charity supporting victims of the fire. Lawrence, the defending champion, claimed his third European Masters title, matching the record set by the legendary Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros. He played a flawless final round of 62, setting the clubhouse lead at 18 under par. Casey had started the day with a three-stroke advantage but faced challenges on the front nine, falling two shots behind Lawrence before regaining the lead with four birdies. However, he bogeyed the 18th hole, forcing the playoff. The playoff featured both players making pars on the first three holes. Lawrence secured the win on the fourth hole with a birdie putt, while Casey missed several short putts, including a 10-foot birdie attempt on the second playoff hole and an eight-foot putt on the third. Tournament organizers changed the pin position on the third playoff hole in an effort to create a decisive moment, but both players still managed to make par. Casey had previously shot a two-under-par 68 in the final round to reach 18 under. England’s Harry Hall finished third at 17 under after a closing 63. Lawrence described his victory as the most emotional of his career, praising Casey’s performance and acknowledging the significance of winning at a course that has hosted the European Masters for 54 years on the DP World Tour.
