French wheelchair tennis player Ksenia Chasteau won the Sardinia Open without having to play her final match after world number one Yui Kamiji withdrew due to illness. The tournament, an ITF 1 category event, took place in Alghero, a coastal city in northern Sardinia. Kamiji, who had previously defeated Chasteau in an earlier round, withdrew before the final, citing a severe flu. This allowed Chasteau to claim the title without playing a final match, marking a significant achievement in her career. Chasteau had already secured her place in the final by defeating the second seed, Dutch player Lizzy De Greef, in the quarterfinals with a score of 7-6(5), 6-3. In the semifinals, she faced British player Cornelia Oosthuizen in a three-set match, which she won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. This victory marked Chasteau's first title of the 2026 season and highlighted her strong performance throughout the year. At just 20 years old, Chasteau is currently ranked seventh in the world in singles wheelchair tennis. Her recent success includes reaching her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros in June, where she lost to Diede de Groot, and advancing to the semifinals of the US Open in September. These results have solidified her position as one of the rising stars in the sport. The Sardinia Open victory adds to Chasteau's growing list of accomplishments and showcases her ability to compete at the highest level. With her ranking and recent performances, she is expected to remain a key player in the wheelchair tennis circuit in the coming seasons.
