Solar charging in sports watches has typically been limited to monochrome, transflective displays, which use very little power. These displays are designed to be readable in both light and low-light conditions without consuming much energy. Garmin, a major player in the wearable tech market, has relied on this type of display for its solar-powered devices. However, Amazfit’s new T-Rex Dual Solar takes a different route by incorporating a color AMOLED screen, which consumes more power but is paired with two solar panels to compensate for the higher energy needs. This design allows the watch to maintain vibrant visuals while still being powered by sunlight.
The T-Rex Dual Solar features a front solar panel integrated around the screen and a second, larger panel on the back of the watch case. The rear panel is particularly useful for recharging during breaks, as it can be oriented directly toward the sun for faster charging. The watch includes several high-end outdoor features, such as titanium grade 5 lenses and buttons, sapphire glass for scratch resistance, a 1.32-inch AMOLED screen with a maximum brightness of 3000 cd/m², dual-frequency GPS for accurate location tracking, color mapping for better navigation, NFC payment support, and an adjustable flashlight capable of reaching 300 lux. Many of these features were already available in previous T-Rex models like the T-Rex 3, T-Rex 3 Pro, and T-Rex Ultra 2.
Amazfit claims that the T-Rex Dual Solar offers up to 51 days of battery life under standard use and up to 180 days in Outdoor Extreme mode, assuming three hours of daily exposure to sunlight with the rear panel facing the sun. Without solar input, the watch is expected to last about 25 days in normal use. Priced at 649.90 euros, the T-Rex Dual Solar is the most expensive model in the T-Rex lineup, which includes the T-Rex Ultra 2 at 549.90 euros and the T-Rex 3 Pro at around 400 euros.
Pre-orders for the T-Rex Dual Solar began on September 22 through the European Amazfit website and select partner retailers. The watch is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts who value both high performance and extended battery life, offering a compelling option for those seeking a feature-rich smartwatch with solar charging capabilities.
