Canada halts helicopter purchase plans

Canada has paused its potential purchase of 16 UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters, according to recent reports, as ongoing tensions with the United States impact defense procurement decisions.

Defense procurement under review

Ottawa had previously considered ordering up to 88 aircraft, which are locally designated as CF-35A. The current diplomatic tensions with the U.S. may also lead to a cap on deliveries of the 16 aircraft already ordered and paid for.

First F-35s delivered to Canada

The first two F-35s were officially handed over to the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 22, 2026, at Luke Base, where they will be used for training Canadian pilots. Unlike other customers, no ceremony was held in Fort Worth at the time of the production line exit of these aircraft.

Tensions with the U.S. affect military plans

The situation is part of a broader tug of war with the White House, which could result in a drastic reduction in the number of aircraft ordered. Ottawa is now considering turning to Saab's Gripen E/F to replace its CF-188 Hornet.
