Music distributors have joined a new effort to fight fraud in music streaming, announced by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) on September 14. This initiative, called the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII), aims to stop the manipulation of digital music services to generate fake revenue from non-genuine plays. Streaming fraud occurs when individuals or companies artificially inflate the number of times a song is played to earn more money from streaming platforms. The IFPI, which represents over 8,000 record companies worldwide, is working with music companies to create a more secure streaming environment.
The SII outlines five key commitments for participating distributors. These include verifying rights ownership and customer identities using strong verification methods, such as Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. This helps ensure that only legitimate artists and companies are using the platforms. Distributors are also required to use effective tools to check for illegal content, fraud, and risks related to artificial intelligence. These tools help identify suspicious activity and ensure that only authorized music is shared.
Another part of the initiative involves detecting and addressing suspected fraud, as well as sharing information about fraudulent activities where the law allows. This helps companies stay ahead of new and evolving fraud tactics. Distributors are also expected to regularly assess and improve their anti-fraud systems to adapt to new threats. This ongoing evaluation ensures that the measures remain effective over time.
Several major music distributors have already signed on to support the SII, including Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Merlin. These companies play a key role in distributing music to streaming platforms around the world. The IFPI is now urging more companies to join the initiative to strengthen the fight against streaming fraud and ensure the long-term health of the music industry.
