In March 2015, Dimitri Somoguy, known as "Dim," started a YouTube channel called ChilledCow as a side project. At the time, he focused on creating playlists of instrumental hip-hop, especially lofi—a style of music characterized by its relaxed beats and calm atmosphere. Lofi music was not common on YouTube, but Dim's unique approach caught the attention of viewers, and the channel grew to 100,000 subscribers within two years. As he studied YouTube trends, he noticed the popularity of Japanese-inspired animations and live streams. Inspired by this, he created a character named Lofi Girl, who sat at a desk with a cat, listening to soft music. The simple and soothing concept quickly gained traction, and the channel reached one million subscribers in just six months. In 2017, the channel faced a setback when YouTube suspended it due to a copyright issue involving an image from the Japanese animated film If You Listen Closely. To move forward, Dim commissioned Colombian illustrator Juan Pablo Machado to design a new character, which evolved into the recognizable Lofi Girl. This character—often shown sitting at a desk with headphones on—became a go-to companion for many viewers during work and study sessions, offering a calming presence in the digital space. The channel's popularity skyrocketed during the rise of remote work and the coronavirus pandemic, which led to a surge in demand for background music. By March 2020, the channel had reached five million subscribers. By September 2026, it had grown to nearly 16 million subscribers, with over 30% from the United States. However, the format of the channel—focused on continuous music playback—limited traditional advertising revenue. To adapt, Dim launched Lofi Records in 2019, a music label that produces and distributes tracks across platforms like Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music. The label now includes over 500 artists and 8,000 tracks, expanding beyond lofi to genres like jazz, hip-hop, classical, and electronic music. The Lofi Girl brand has continued to evolve, introducing new characters such as Lofi Boy (also known as Synthwave Boy) and Lofi Teacher (Julien Maison), each with their own musical styles and settings. The brand has also partnered with well-known companies like Rocket League, Lego, Disney, Marvel, Ubisoft, and Renault R5, and even launched a gaming branch with Mooncube Games. The community has played a significant role in shaping the Lofi Girl universe, creating stories and theories around small details, such as a snowflake that inspired the popular clip "Snowman." Dim is now taking the Lofi Girl brand beyond the digital world with the opening of the first Lofi Café in Paris. The café aims to bring the virtual community into a physical space, offering a cozy environment for work, relaxation, and socializing. This marks a new chapter for Lofi Girl, blending the digital and real-world experiences of its large and dedicated fanbase.
