Several Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Realme, are known for offering devices that provide good value for money. However, these companies often come with a large number of pre-installed apps and advertisements, which can take up significant storage space and potentially affect user privacy. Xiaomi, in particular, has been criticized for its extensive use of these practices, with some apps being difficult to remove even if users decline them during the initial setup. To help users manage these pre-installed apps, they can uninstall unwanted applications by holding the app icon on the home screen and selecting the uninstall option. Alternatively, they can go to Settings > Apps and choose the uninstall icon. This process can free up several megabytes or even gigabytes of storage space and prevent unnecessary updates from occurring in the background. Users can also disable certain system services that are responsible for advertising and data tracking. This involves turning off two background services called MSA (for MIUI System Ads) and System Daemon. Disabling these can reduce the number of ads shown in Xiaomi apps and limit the collection of user data. To do this, users can go to Settings > Fingerprints, Facial Data, and Screen Lock (authenticate) > Authorization & Revocation and uncheck the relevant services, waiting 10 seconds before confirming the revocation. To further reduce ads in Xiaomi’s own apps, users can go into the settings of each app and uncheck options related to receiving recommendations. For example, in the Security app, users can uncheck "Receive recommendations" and press Cleaner to uncheck the same option. Similar steps can be taken in the File Manager, Downloads, Themes, and App Mall/GetApps applications. Finally, to stop receiving commercial notifications from these apps, users can adjust settings at the Android or HyperOS level. This involves going to Settings > Notifications and Status Bar > Application Notifications and unchecking Xiaomi applications such as GetApps, Themes, Mi Browser, Mi Video, Mi Store, and Music. These steps can help users create a more streamlined and private experience on their devices.
