Final Fantasy VII Revelation in development

Square Enix is developing Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, with plans for a more expansive open world and greater verticality in gameplay.

Game director outlines vision

Naoki Hamaguchi, the game's director, shared during the Paris Games Week that the team aimed to build upon lessons from Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, creating a more integrated open world experience that includes features like the Highwind airship and chocobo flight.

Development timeline and approach

The team began conceptualizing Revelation a year before Rebirth launched, ensuring a smooth transition between the games. Hamaguchi emphasized that the project was approached with the mindset that "it's the last one, so we have to give everything."

Enhanced set design and music

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is expected to surpass Rebirth in set design and music, aiming for a more immersive and visually impressive open world that enhances the player's sense of exploration.

Combat system and player choice

The game will use a hybrid combat system blending real-time action with turn-based elements, reflecting industry trends toward immediacy. However, it will retain classic Final Fantasy mechanics like the Active Time Battle system.

Mini-games and character depth

The game will include mini-games that explore character backstories, addressing past criticisms. Players can automatically complete these to access additional stories about both main and secondary characters.

Release date and platforms

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
