Olivia Cusack, the sister of the late Maddy Cusack, has vowed to keep her sister’s "legacy alive" three years after her passing. To honor Maddy, Olivia joined family and friends in a 29-mile walk from Bramall Lane, the home stadium of Sheffield United, to their family home in Horsley, near Derby. The event, called "Bringing Maddy Home," took place on Saturday and aimed to raise both funds and awareness for causes related to women’s football. The walk was inspired by some of the evidence heard during the ongoing inquest into Maddy’s death. Maddy Cusack, a 27-year-old former England Under-19s international, was the first player to reach 100 appearances for Sheffield United’s women’s team. The inquest into her death has faced multiple delays. Originally scheduled to begin in January 2026, the proceedings were postponed several times in 2025. In July, the inquest was adjourned again after new evidence was uncovered, and it is now set to resume on 7 December. The family has already endured eight days of testimony since the hearing started on 29 June, but the discovery of additional documents forced a pause until December. Olivia described the repeated delays as "really difficult" and "very confusing," adding that the long wait has been "very frustrating." A coroner recently apologized to the family for the ongoing delays. Meanwhile, the Maddy Cusack Foundation, which supports women’s and girls’ football, has been receiving donations from the walk. The foundation has also partnered with Elite Football Development, an organization run by Stockport County defender Ben Osborn, which focuses on inspiring young people through sports and education. As of Saturday afternoon, the fundraising page for the walk had already surpassed £1,100. In honor of Maddy, a minute’s applause will be held before kick-off at Sunday’s Women’s Super League 2 match between Newcastle and Sheffield United. Olivia and her family continue to seek justice and closure while working to ensure Maddy’s contributions to football are remembered and celebrated.
