Solidarity grocery store in Grenoble

Located in the city center of Grenoble, the solidarity grocery store Escope 38 provides everyday products at reduced prices to vulnerable students, between 20 percent and 30 percent of the market value.

Supported by the Food Bank

Supported by the Food Bank, the national Escope network sees its beneficiaries increasing day by day. In Grenoble, Escope 38 currently has 1,100 beneficiaries, compared to 900 only a year ago.

How the store operates

Its principle is simple: a grocery store where students can come to shop at prices between 20 percent and 30 percent of the market value. Fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, dairy products and hygiene products are offered.

Volunteers and leadership

It is currently managed by about sixty volunteers, led by Patricia Galéa, who has been the director of the organization since its creation in November 2024.

Eligibility and registration

The majority of eligible students from Isère While the French, including students, have been mobilizing for a month against the high cost of living, the Department of Isère recalls that the vast majority of students from Isère are eligible for the program. To register, it is sufficient to complete a file online. This allows the association to calculate the remaining amount to live on. The response is given within 48 hours.

Involvement of foreign students

"We also count on a very large majority of foreign students. We do not know why the others do not push the door. Perhaps the fear of being considered a 'beneficiary'," states Sylvie Flandrin, administrator of the Isère Food Bank.

Sales and supply sources

In 2025, 75 tons of products were sold. 80 percent of the goods come from the Food Bank's collections, and 20 percent are direct purchases that Esope can ensure thanks to the revenues.
