A non-league football club has reported that an individual was impersonating their manager and making fraudulent offers to players across the non-league game. Gainsborough Trinity, which plays in the seventh tier of English football, has informed the Football Association and the Northern Premier League about the matter. The club said the person falsely claimed to represent manager Russ Wilcox and the club, offering unauthorized wage and contract proposals to players. These approaches were not made by Wilcox or on behalf of Gainsborough Trinity Football Club.
The club strongly condemned the actions of the individual, stating that impersonating a football manager and making false representations to players is completely unacceptable. Such behavior could cause unnecessary disruption and reputational damage to the club and its players. Gainsborough Trinity’s chief executive, Matt Boles, addressed the imposter directly, telling them to "get a life." The club thanked officials who identified the fake inquiries and brought them to Wilcox's attention, noting that many did so because they know him personally and recognize his professional standards.
Russ Wilcox, 62, has had a long career in football, both as a player and a manager. He previously played for and managed Scunthorpe United and has also held managerial roles at York City and Farsley Celtic. Gainsborough Trinity had a notable run in the FA Cup last season, reaching the first round before being eliminated by Accrington Stanley. The club is set to face Leamington in the FA Cup qualifying rounds on Saturday, 19 September, playing away from home.
