Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has confirmed that Aaron Ramsdale still has a role at the club, even though he is now considered the fourth-choice goalkeeper. Ramsdale, 28, joined Southampton from Arsenal in the summer of 2024, where he had been the backup to Spanish goalkeeper David Raya. During the 2024-25 Premier League season, he made 30 appearances as Southampton were relegated to the Championship, the second tier of English football. Ramsdale then had a loan spell at Newcastle United, where he played 23 times under manager Eddie Howe, before returning to Southampton over the summer. The club remains in the Championship after being excluded from last season's play-off final due to the Spygate scandal, which involved the club's former owner. Ramsdale has been playing for Southampton's under-21 team this season, a decision Eckert said he made himself. Despite failing to secure a transfer during the recent window, it seems Ramsdale will stay at St Mary's until at least January. Eckert emphasized that his role at the club has been shaped before her arrival, and they had open discussions from the start of pre-season through the end of the transfer window. She noted that the expectations for Ramsdale are clear—he is expected to support the team in the best way possible, and he has been professional in doing so. Eckert also mentioned that Ramsdale recently became a father for the second time and expects him to remain with Southampton. Southampton's first-choice goalkeeper is Daniel Peretz, who the club signed permanently this summer after a successful loan spell last season. Peretz made a strong impression in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign, and Eckert has made it clear that he will remain the first-choice goalkeeper. The club reportedly paid £6 million to sign Peretz in June, and Eckert reiterated her support for him as the number one. She also reaffirmed her backing for George Long, who was the second-choice goalkeeper last season, and for Jamie Jones, a 37-year-old goalkeeper who returned to the club on deadline day. Eckert stated that the club has made a clear commitment to Peretz as the number one and to Long as the number two. Eckert added that the group of goalkeepers worked well together last season, and that Jamie Jones, who acts as the training goalkeeper, also contributed positively. She emphasized that this is the way forward for the club, ensuring a strong and cohesive goalkeeping unit moving forward.
