The film Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, has had a noticeable effect on the sales of two recent remakes of the Resident Evil video game series: Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 (2023), according to data from Alinea Analytics. Sales of both games on PlayStation 5 rose significantly in the week following the film's release. Specifically, Resident Evil 2 Remake saw a 64% increase in sales, while Resident Evil 4 (2023) experienced a 54% rise. Including sales on Steam, these numbers increased further by 11% and 14%, respectively. On PlayStation, the revenue from the two games saw a dramatic increase of 80% and 84%, respectively. Capcom, the game publisher, had lowered the prices of the games roughly ten days before the film's release. While these discounts played a major role in the sales boost, the portrayal of Austin Abrams as Bryan in the film also had an impact. After September 18, the number of daily active users on several Resident Evil titles increased significantly. Resident Evil 2 Remake saw the highest increase, rising by 48% from about 78,000 to around 116,000 daily players. This is largely because the film's storyline overlaps with the events in this game. Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw a 24% increase in players, while Resident Evil 3 Remake had a 25% rise and Resident Evil Requiem experienced a 20% increase. Resident Evil Requiem has also recently surpassed the 500 million dollar revenue mark, with 91% of those sales coming from PlayStation and Steam. The game also helped boost sales in Japan during the first half of 2026, with a 13% increase in copies sold, reaching 21 million units. With the upcoming release of the Code Veronica remake, Resident Evil fans are enjoying a successful period. This success is largely attributed to Capcom, which had a strong year with three well-received game releases. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was praised by critics, and Pragmata impressed both critics and casual players with its creative gameplay and engaging story. Cregger admitted he was "naive" to believe that hardcore fans of the Resident Evil franchise would be satisfied with his decision to not directly adapt the games for the film. However, the box office success of the film seems to contradict that assumption.
