New art center opens in Bruges

A new art center called BRUSK has been operating in the historic center of Bruges since last spring, near the Groeningemuseum. It adds to the city's cultural offerings with a focus on contemporary art and design.

Exhibition explores sea and water themes

Starting on October 30, 2026, and running until March 14, 2027, BRUSK will host an exhibition titled Marée haute, which examines the relationship between fashion and contemporary art centered around the sea and water.

Curator highlights sea's evolving role

The exhibition, curated by Karen van Godtsenhoven, seeks to show how modern artists and fashion designers are reimagining the sea. This body of water has long been a source of inspiration and a defining feature of Bruges, connected to the nearby North Sea through its canals.

Climate change and cultural myths

Water is at the forefront of global concerns due to climate change, with issues like heatwaves, droughts, and floods becoming more common. The exhibition will also look at the sea’s role in myths and legends, a theme that recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey.

Notable designers and artists featured

The exhibition will include works from prominent Flemish fashion designers like Dries van Noten, Olivier Theyskens, and Iris van Herpen, as well as pieces from famous fashion houses such as Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Marine Serre. It will also showcase art by contemporary creators like Bill Viola, Pierre and Gilles, and Martin Parr.
