Volkswagen has re-entered the electric city car market with the introduction of the ID. Polo, a new model designed to compete with the Renault 5 E-Tech and a growing number of electric vehicles from Chinese manufacturers. The ID. Polo is built on a dedicated platform for small electric vehicles and aims to correct past issues with Volkswagen's earlier electric offerings. Priced starting at under 25,000 euros, the ID. Polo offers a large trunk, a range of up to 450 kilometers on a single charge, and semi-autonomous driving features. A test drive in Corsica was part of a press event organized by the brand to showcase the car's capabilities.
The ID. Polo measures 4.05 meters in length, 1.816 meters in width, and 1.53 meters in height, making it one of the larger vehicles in its class. It is powered by a 211-horsepower front motor, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h. The car runs on an Android Automotive OS with a 13-inch central display. It features a Type 2 Combo (CCS) charging port and offers two battery options: a 37 kWh LFP battery with a range of up to 331 km, and a 52 kWh NMC battery with a range of up to 453 km. The base model, the Trend version, starts at 24,990 euros, with higher trims reaching up to 35,820 euros.
The ID. Polo’s design is described as more reassuring, robust, and modern compared to Volkswagen’s earlier electric models. It includes features like matrix headlights, an illuminated strip, and a large 19-inch wheel. Inside, the car features a simple layout with large fabric surfaces and physical buttons, creating a pleasant and high-quality atmosphere. The rear seats offer ample space, and the trunk has a capacity of 456 liters, which is larger than the Renault Scénic E-Tech's trunk.
The infotainment system includes a 10.25-inch driver display and a 12.9-inch central screen, both running on Volkswagen’s ID. Software 6, which is based on Android Automotive. Volkswagen has developed its own apps and interface, which have been improved since the launch of the ID.3 in 2019. Driving assistance features include driver inattention alerts, lane departure warnings, and a level 2 semi-autonomous driving system, which is available as an optional upgrade.
The driving experience of the ID. Polo is described as smooth and comfortable, with a natural brake pedal and one-pedal braking that makes city driving easier. However, the front-engine layout slightly limits the car’s turning diameter and maneuverability in tight spaces. Its performance is notable, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 7.1 seconds—faster than the Renault 5 E-Tech’s 8 seconds. The ID. Polo is positioned as a competitor to the Renault 5 E-Tech and emerging Chinese models like the MG4 Urban, Geely E2, and Leapmotor B03. While the ID. Polo offers greater versatility and sophistication, the Chinese models may offer more competitive pricing and features.
