Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Polo, an all-electric version of its popular supermini, which will debut in the UK on 10 September. This marks Volkswagen’s first electric car to use a front-wheel-drive layout and is built on the MEB+ electric platform. While it won’t immediately replace the petrol-powered Polo, it will join Volkswagen’s growing lineup of electric ID models. The ID. Polo is available with two battery sizes—37kWh and 52kWh—and offers three power outputs in the UK. The larger 52kWh battery provides a claimed range of 281 miles, qualifying for the UK government’s £1,500 Electric Car Grant. The 37kWh version can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in about 23 minutes, while the 52kWh version takes around 24 minutes for the same charge.
The ID. Polo offers a generous 441-litre boot, larger than the current Volkswagen Golf and ID.3, which expands to 1,240 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Its dimensions are 4,053mm long, 1,816mm wide, and 1,530mm tall, with a 2,592mm wheelbase. Inside, the car features a premium cabin with physical buttons on the steering wheel, traditional heating and ventilation controls, and a physical knob for volume and track changes. The interior also includes a 12.9-inch central touchscreen and a 10-inch digital display, which can be switched to a retro-themed display inspired by the first-generation Golf, complete with an analogue speedometer and rev counter.
The ID. Polo is equipped with a range of driver-assistance features, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. Starting prices for the ID. Polo Life with the 37kWh battery and 114bhp motor are £23,945, while the 52kWh, 208bhp Style version begins at £31,745. Optional extras include a Harman Kardon sound system, massage seats, and a panoramic glass roof. The car has a maximum speed of around 99mph and can tow up to 1,200kg with the 208bhp version. The interior uses recycled materials, with textiles made from recycled PET, and offers a more spacious feel compared to the petrol-powered Polo.
The ID. Polo features a new braking system that blends regenerative and conventional braking, along with one-pedal driving capabilities. The 208bhp version delivers 290Nm of torque and accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds, while the 133bhp version takes 9.5 seconds for the same feat. The car’s suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and a compact torsion beam at the rear, with the battery positioned low between the axles for a balanced ride. The 52kWh version has an efficiency rating of 4.7 miles per kWh, while the 37kWh model achieves around 4.5 miles per kWh. The ID. Polo’s 281-mile range on the larger battery makes it a practical option for longer journeys, offering greater flexibility compared to smaller electric cars.
