A woman who previously accused rapper Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) and Sean "Diddy" Combs of raping her when she was 13 years old has now said her allegations were false. The woman, known in court documents as Jane Doe, had filed a lawsuit in 2024, claiming she was drugged and raped by Carter and Combs at a party after the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. Both men denied the accusations, and the woman dropped the lawsuit last year. Carter then filed a lawsuit against her and her legal team, alleging defamation. In a statement submitted as part of that lawsuit on Thursday, Jane Doe said, "Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me whatsoever." She also said her claims that Carter and Combs raped her while a third celebrity watched were false. She acknowledged that her false accusations had caused Carter "immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone." Carter had previously denied the accusations, calling them a "blackmail attempt" and describing them as "frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations." When the accuser dropped her case in February 2025, Carter said the trauma endured by him, his wife Beyoncé, their children, and loved ones could not be dismissed. Jane Doe, from Alabama, has since been removed from Carter's lawsuit. She stated she had not received any money from Carter or anyone acting on his behalf and had not been paid to make her latest declaration. Jay-Z is still suing the woman's former legal representatives, including Tony Buzbee. Buzbee, who was not aware of Jane Doe's new declaration, said she had given the same story to multiple lawyers before meeting him. He suggested that her sudden claim of lying was new information. Buzbee had previously claimed that Carter's investigators had harassed and threatened Jane Doe to make her recant her story, but she now says she never received any threats from Carter or his representatives. Jane Doe said she saw an advertisement on Facebook in 2024 seeking people with sexual assault claims against Combs, which triggered memories of being raped as a child. She was contacted by a law firm but was not provided a draft of the lawsuit before it was filed in October 2024. She claimed the lawyers filed the case without conducting any independent investigation or verifying the allegations. She said the lawsuit falsely claimed that Carter and Combs had raped her as a minor while an unnamed celebrity watched. Buzbee also represents other individuals who have accused Combs of misconduct. Combs denied Jane Doe's claims, with his lawyer calling them one of several civil cases "pushed forward by an attorney more focused on media headlines than legal merit." In July 2025, Combs was convicted on prostitution-related charges involving two ex-girlfriends and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence. The BBC has contacted Combs for comment.
