Seniors read to kids in a new volunteer program promoting the joy of reading across France.
Program invites older adults to read to children
A volunteer reading program called Lire et faire lire is seeking individuals aged 50 and older to read aloud to children aged 0 to 12 in various community settings. The goal is to foster a love of reading through shared reading experiences.Reading sessions take place in multiple locations
The program organizes reading sessions in schools, nurseries, libraries, leisure centers, and other collective spaces. These sessions can occur during school hours, after school, or outside of regular school time, depending on the needs of the host institution. Each volunteer interacts with a small group of children
Volunteers are assigned to interact with two to six children in a structured setting defined by the program and the host institution. The sessions are not meant for academic support but are focused on the joy and experience of reading together.Books and sessions are tailored to the children’s age
The books and duration of each reading session are carefully selected based on the age of the children and are decided in consultation with the relevant staff. This ensures the content is appropriate and engaging for the audience.Regular participation is encouraged
The program emphasizes regularity, aiming for at least one reading session per week. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to scheduled sessions throughout the school year, unless unexpected circumstances arise.Volunteers can specify availability and location preferences
During registration, volunteers can indicate their preferred days, types of institutions they are comfortable with, and the distance they are willing to travel. Efforts are made to match volunteers with locations close to their homes.Program is currently recruiting new volunteers
Lire et faire lire is actively seeking new volunteer readers and is accepting registrations through its website at https://www.lireetfairelire.org/content/devenir-benevole-10.
