Drivers in Hampshire are encountering significant traffic problems on the M3 motorway after a lorry crash led to the closure of part of the road. The affected area includes the eastbound lanes between junctions J9, known as the Winnall Interchange, and Popham Junction, where the motorway connects to the A303. This closure has caused major disruptions during the morning rush hour, with long lines of traffic backing up on nearby roads for several miles. National Highways has advised drivers to expect delays of around 35 minutes and up to four miles of congestion on the surrounding roads. The accident involved a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV), a large truck used for transporting goods, which crashed into the central reservation of the motorway. The collision damaged the truck’s fuel tank, spilling about 300 litres of diesel onto the road. The incident occurred around midnight, and the vehicle was removed from the scene by early morning. Due to the damage caused, National Highways says the road will need to be resurfaced, which means the closure is likely to remain in place through the morning rush hour. To help ease the traffic, a diversion route has been set up for drivers. Those using the eastbound lanes should exit at J9 and follow the route marked with a solid diamond symbol on local roads. From the roundabout, drivers should take the second exit and join the A34 heading towards Newbury. They should continue on this road for about eight miles until reaching the A303 Bullington Cross Interchange, where they can rejoin the motorway if possible. Drivers are encouraged to plan extra travel time and consider alternative routes if available.
