A major section of the M3 motorway, specifically the eastbound lanes, has been closed after a serious collision near the junction with the M25. The crash happened in the early hours of Tuesday between Junction 3, which leads to Lightwater and Bagshot, and Junction 2, which connects to the M25. Two lorries were involved in the incident, with one of them striking an overhead gantry and the other suffering a ruptured fuel tank. This caused 300 litres of diesel to spill across the road, creating a hazardous situation for emergency responders and road workers. Emergency services, including Surrey Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, arrived at the scene shortly after 4am following reports of the crash. Both drivers of the heavy goods vehicles were able to exit their cabs unaided and received medical attention from paramedics at the roadside. National Highways, the organization responsible for maintaining motorways in England, confirmed that the spilled diesel has damaged the road surface. As a result, emergency resurfacing work is needed before the road can be reopened safely. National Highways has stated that a full resurfacing of the affected section is required, meaning the M3 is expected to remain closed through the morning rush hour. The closure has led to severe traffic congestion, with long delays reported near Junction 4 and significant gridlock on surrounding roads such as the A322 and A30. To help manage the situation, a formal diversion route has been established for drivers. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area altogether or plan for significantly longer travel times if they must pass through the region.
