A man in his 20s suffered serious injuries in a wrong-way collision on the M1 motorway near Wakefield. The crash happened shortly after 11pm on 11 September near Junction 41. According to police, a blue Kia Proceed failed to stop when officers were present and continued driving the wrong way on the northbound lane. It then collided head-on with a red Dacia Sandero. The driver of the Dacia, a man in his 20s, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, which are being considered as potentially life-changing. Three passengers in the Kia were reported to have only minor injuries. An 18-year-old man and two women, aged 15 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving. The 30-year-old woman was also arrested for allegedly driving over the legal alcohol limit. All three are currently in custody while police continue their investigation. One person is reported to have fled the scene after the crash. The M1 motorway was closed for several hours as emergency services, including an air ambulance, responded to the incident. National Highways confirmed that both directions of the motorway were reopened the following morning. Police are asking anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to come forward. They have provided a reference number for those wishing to contact them with details. At the scene, police cars and ambulances were seen around the cordoned-off area, with traffic congestion reported. A social media update just before midnight confirmed that the northbound carriageway between Junctions 39 and 41 was closed, and traffic was stopped on the southbound carriageway between Junctions 41 and 40. Delays of about 20 minutes were reported in both directions at the time.
