Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, aimed to create a more affordable and environmentally friendly version of its R2 vehicle compared to its earlier R1 models. The company focused on reducing the environmental impact of the R2 through various strategies, including using more renewable energy in production and incorporating more recycled and biodegradable materials into the vehicle. Rivian set a goal to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the vehicle's lifetime carbon emissions by 2030. Remarkably, the company reached this target four years ahead of schedule.
In its 2025 impact report, Rivian detailed its progress in sustainability for the year. The report highlights that the R2 Performance model produces only half the greenhouse gas emissions of the original R1 models over its entire lifespan — from production to use and eventual recycling. The R2 is a larger, more affordable SUV designed to attract a wide range of customers. Achieving such a significant reduction in emissions, especially when compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles, is considered a major accomplishment in the automotive industry.
Rivian credits its success to improvements in aerodynamics, weight reduction, efficiency, and the use of sustainable materials. For example, some of the vehicle’s surface materials are made from waste from the paper industry sourced from responsibly managed forests in the Nordic region. The R2’s floor mats are composed of 99 percent ocean waste, while the frunk (front trunk) and trim are made from 85 percent post-consumer recycled material. Even the resin cell trays used for the battery packs are entirely recycled.
Looking ahead, Rivian expects to produce around 70,000 vehicles in 2026, with the R2 being a major driver of this increase. This would represent a significant rise from the approximately 42,000 vehicles sold in 2025. In addition to its environmental goals, Rivian has also published its own AI guidelines as part of its impact report. These guidelines emphasize safety, fairness, data privacy, and transparency, with oversight from an executive AI Governance Committee. The company is also advancing its AI capabilities, including developing robotaxis for Uber and planning to launch an autonomous driving system that can operate without constant human supervision as early as next year.
