A 15-kilometer greenway along the Huveaune river enters public inquiry, aiming to connect Marseille neighborhoods with ecological restoration.
Greenway project enters public inquiry
A project for a large greenway along the Huveaune river has entered a public inquiry phase. The initiative, which aims to create a 15-kilometer path, could see new sections begin construction around 2028.Timeline delayed multiple times
The project, first announced for 2024, was later moved to 2025 and then 2026. It now enters a new phase under the authority of the Metropolis and its planner, Soleam. A public inquiry began on Monday, October 12, 2026, following a prefectural decree.Public input invited for the project
The public is invited to provide feedback until November 17, either online or in person at the city hall or municipal offices in several arrondissements. These include the 6th-8th, 9th-10th, and 11th-12th districts, which are most affected by the project.Project aims to improve ecology and mobility
The greenway is intended to create a route for soft mobility, such as walking and cycling, while also re-vegetating and restoring the river. The river is a key ecological corridor for species like amphibians, reptiles, birds, and bats.Future route and features outlined
If the public inquiry results in a favorable opinion, the Metropolis could begin constructing a continuous pedestrian and cycling path connecting Marseille’s Prado beaches to Penne-sur-Huveaune. The route is part of a larger bike plan, specifically line 2 - East Huveaune. Along the path, leisure and educational facilities are expected to be developed.Project team and current progress
The project is led by Artelia, with landscape architects, urban planners, and environmental experts involved. A 1.5-kilometer section of the path is currently under construction between the boulevard Michelet and the Louise Michel college. This section is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.Challenges ahead for the full route
The continuation of the path eastward from the Capelette will involve complex environmental, mobility, road, and land issues. The river crosses private and industrial areas over a dozen kilometers, complicating the project’s full realization.Completion timeline and budget estimates
The last schedule from Soleam in 2025 aimed for 2032 to complete the full greenway. However, work will likely proceed in sections depending on land availability and technical feasibility. The estimated budget is 23 million euros, but some experts believe it could reach 30 to 40 million euros.
