Following a new day of student mobilization on Thursday, October 8, the Minister of National Education Édouard Geffray announced on TF1 that 3,000 substitute teachers will be assigned to schools deemed "problematic" due to a lack of teachers. This is made possible by a software that was in the process of being deployed and which allows the identification of schools in difficulty. The teachers will be assigned between "Friday and Tuesday," the Minister of National Education specified. He also emphasized that he will "authorize rectors to recruit more than what is allowed where there are needs." The details of the affected schools have not yet been disclosed. According to one report, 144 high schools have been identified as being in a critical situation, and 400 others are also prioritized. The deployment is possible thanks to a new software implemented by his ministry, he explained. "Thanks to a software I requested a year ago, we were able to identify 144 schools considered as red and 400 as orange," detailed Édouard Geffray. As a result, the government believes it can effectively mobilize teachers who are currently unassigned. Additionally, the minister will "authorize rectors to recruit more than what they are authorized to," mentioning the recruitment of "several hundred more" teachers between Friday and Tuesday. The minister promises to allocate "hundreds of thousands" of additional teaching hours. When asked why these measures had not been taken earlier, Édouard Geffray highlighted the lack of tools to accurately identify needs. "The software is in the process of deployment, I accelerated things, it was scheduled for the beginning of November. We did not have the management tools," he justified. The minister also indicated that 66,000 high school students had responded to a consultation organized in recent days, promising responses "school by school." Finally, he announced that the government would submit amendments to the draft budget law for 2027 concerning the Education Ministry's budget. Without announcing that its budget would increase compared to the already presented proposal, this could alter the billions already planned.
