NordVPN updates security strategy for AI threats

NordVPN is updating its security products to respond to new risks created by artificial intelligence, according to a report from ZDNET.com. The company’s technical director, Marijus Briedis, explained that AI has changed many basic ideas in cybersecurity, requiring the industry to rethink how it defends against threats.

New next-generation antivirus launched

NordVPN recently introduced a "next-generation antivirus" (NGAV) designed to protect against modern threats like social engineering, phishing, and identity theft. These threats are growing in complexity and can evolve quickly with the help of AI, according to Briedis, who said that much of the security users need is already available online.

NGAV aims to simplify digital security

The NGAV is described as a security system for users' entire digital lives. It promises to warn users about fake websites, block ads and trackers, and remove malware without requiring any user action. Briedis stressed that an invisible, easy-to-use solution is key to encouraging better security habits among users.

User awareness remains a challenge

Briedis emphasized that security companies can protect users, but they cannot fix poor personal choices. He said it’s important to help users understand how their tools work, the importance of encryption, and the risks of sharing data with others.

NordVPN explores AI agent security

As personal AI assistants become more common, NordVPN is researching ways to protect them from cyber threats. Briedis noted that these assistants, which can run on devices with or without internet access, create new risks. This feature is still being developed and will be included in the NordVPN app when it launches.

NordVPN uses custom and open-source AI models

NordVPN has integrated its own AI models into its products while also using leading models from major labs. For the NGAV, the company is developing smaller models to handle specific tasks like detecting phishing scams. These models can run locally on user devices with minimal hardware requirements.

AI use is limited in payment systems

One of NordVPN’s strict rules is that the payment teams do not use AI. The company allows AI experimentation in other areas, but Briedis acknowledged that employees face the same pressure to adapt as in other tech firms.

AI and privacy concerns remain complex

While some users may be wary of combining AI with privacy tools, Briedis said NordVPN has not faced resistance from customers over its use of AI in features like the NGAV. He noted that AI is already widely used in many areas, so its presence in security tools is not unusual.

Regulation may slow AI innovation

Briedis warned that new laws like the CRA in Europe could limit innovation by increasing compliance burdens. While regulations like the GDPR can add trust, they also make software development more challenging for companies like NordVPN.
