Great Western Railway (GWR) is reducing its train schedule in Devon and Cornwall starting Monday, 9 September, due to ongoing issues with its fleet of trains. The decision comes after repeated service disruptions caused by technical problems with the company’s new second-hand Class 175 trains. These trains were supposed to replace older models on regional routes, but they have not performed reliably, leading to frequent cancellations and delays. GWR has removed a small number of services from sale in an effort to manage the situation and improve overall reliability. The Class 175 trains, which are being delivered in batches, have faced significant challenges. Out of the 15 delivered so far, only one or two have operated properly on any given day. The problems are attributed to the trains having been stored for a long time before being put into service, which has required more extensive maintenance than expected. This has led to delays in getting them fully operational and has affected the reliability of GWR's services in the region. GWR has acknowledged the frustration of passengers and staff due to the poor performance and frequent cancellations. In a message to stakeholders, the company stated that the new trains have required more recommissioning work than anticipated, and technical issues now need immediate attention. The timetable reductions are intended to provide more certainty for customers and help protect the capacity of other services in Devon and Cornwall. The changes include the removal of six weekday services and a smaller number of Saturday services between Penzance and Plymouth or Exeter. To address the ongoing issues, GWR has formed a joint technical investigation team with its train owners, Angel Trains, and the original manufacturers, Alstom. This team will conduct a detailed review of all reported defects to better understand the causes of the problems and improve maintenance and repair processes. While the affected services are being cut temporarily, GWR has stated that it aims to restore them as soon as possible. Passengers on the withdrawn services will not be eligible for delay compensation, as the changes were not formally advertised in advance.
