Train services from London Paddington will be disrupted this winter as part of major improvements to the Dolphin Junction, a key section of the railway between Slough and Langley. To carry out essential track renewal work, the railway will close for two days on the weekend of 28 and 29 November. To help reduce the impact on travelers, Great Western Railway (GWR) will run special trains between London Euston and Bristol Temple Meads, as well as between Euston and Swansea or Carmarthen. These trains will run hourly but will not stop at stations between Euston and Swindon, including Oxford and Didcot Parkway.
Passengers traveling between Reading and London will need to use alternative routes, such as GWR trains from Reading to Guildford, followed by a change at Guildford to reach London Waterloo. GWR will also offer improved services with additional trains running non-stop between Reading and Guildford, taking around 30 minutes. The Night Riviera sleeper train will still operate from Paddington on the evening of Friday, 27 November, but will arrive at Euston instead of Paddington on Saturday morning. It will then depart from Euston on Sunday evening and return to Paddington on Monday morning.
Paddington station, which is also used by the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line, will not be able to operate services to and from Heathrow Airport over the weekend. Travelers are advised to use alternative airport transfer services during this time. The Elizabeth line will have a reduced service, running only between Reading and Maidenhead, with no services passing through Paddington to Abbey Wood or Shenfield. Only the Bakerloo line will stop at Paddington during the weekend.
The improvements to Dolphin Junction will also affect train services during the Christmas and New Year period. The railway will be closed between 27 December 2026 and 3 January 2027, following the usual Christmas shutdown on 25 and 26 December. GWR has not yet provided further details about temporary arrangements for the affected services. The work is expected to be completed by January 2027.
