Windows 11 taskbar movement returns

Microsoft is reintroducing the ability to move the taskbar in Windows 11, a feature that was removed when the operating system launched in 2021. This change is part of ongoing updates aimed at improving user customization and flexibility.

New context menu enables taskbar repositioning

In a recent build of Windows 11, a new context menu has been added that allows users to move the taskbar to the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen. This menu is accessed by right-clicking on an empty space on the taskbar and includes four buttons for repositioning.

Feature is hidden and not fully accessible

Despite being included in the build, the new menu is not visible by default and cannot be activated manually by users participating in Microsoft's Insider program. This suggests the feature is still under development and not yet ready for general use.

Feature first seen in internal testing

The taskbar repositioning menu was first revealed in March by a Microsoft engineer in an internal video. The company later explained that it was a debugging tool used for testing, but the buttons have now reappeared in a public Insider build.

Limitations remain compared to Windows 10

While the new menu offers more flexibility, it still lacks some features present in Windows 10, such as drag-and-drop repositioning. Other limitations include the inability to hide the taskbar automatically when it's not at the bottom of the screen or to use its compact vertical layout.
