Microsoft is testing a new option in Windows 11 that could let users change how taskbar previews appear. The feature, found in experimental versions of the operating system by the website Windows Latest, is a hidden setting called Show taskbar previews as. This setting allows users to switch between the current Thumbnail mode, which shows small previews of open windows, and a new List mode. In List mode, only the icon and title of each window would be shown in a single line, without any visual previews. This layout is similar to how the taskbar worked in Windows XP, where multiple windows from the same application were grouped under one button, and clicking it would reveal a list of their titles. Visual previews were later introduced with Windows Vista.
The feature is currently available only in the latest Windows Insider builds in the Experimental channel. To enable it, users with build version 26340.9596 can use a tool called ViveTool. The process involves downloading the tool from its GitHub repository, extracting the files, opening the Command Prompt as an administrator in the folder, and running the command: vivetool /enable /id:62932453. After restarting the computer, the new Show taskbar previews as menu should appear in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, offering the choice between Thumbnail and List modes.
Microsoft has not officially announced this feature, and it is not included in the notes for this build version. The design might still change before it reaches the general public, or it could be removed if Microsoft decides not to continue developing this experience. As with many experimental features, it remains uncertain whether it will be included in future versions of Windows or made available to all users.
