Former world champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has announced his desire to continue his boxing career, despite losing his comeback fight to Damian Knyba of Poland in New Jersey. The 36-year-old heavyweight made headlines seven years ago when he stunned the boxing world by defeating Britain's Anthony Joshua to claim his world titles. Since then, Ruiz Jr. has struggled with injuries and has only fought four times since losing the rematch to Joshua in December 2019. In his latest bout at the Prudential Center in Newark, Ruiz Jr. appeared significantly less effective than in previous fights, barely surviving a knockdown in the seventh round before being saved by the bell. He ultimately lost by a unanimous points decision, with judges scoring the fight 117-110, 114-113, and 114-113 in favor of Knyba, who improved his record to 18 wins and one loss. Despite the loss, Ruiz Jr. quickly expressed his desire for a rematch, suggesting that he felt Knyba held him during the fight. "I don't know, I think it was just him holding," Ruiz Jr. said. "Every time I tried to come in, he'd hold me really tight, and I just couldn't let my combinations go. He played a good game plan, but I'd love to run it back and do things a lot different." Ruiz Jr. acknowledged that he was rusty after taking his first fight since drawing with American Jarrell Miller in August 2024. The former conqueror of Joshua explained that he had chosen Knyba deliberately, despite the challenge. "It was just a long layoff, and it was a great opponent," he said. "I didn't want to take an easy fight, so that's why I took Damian. He's a big guy. But we've got to take risks." Ruiz Jr. has recently signed with British promoter Eddie Hearn, signaling his intent to remain active in the sport. Although the loss was disappointing, Ruiz Jr. remains confident in his abilities. "I've still got it in me, man," he said. "I've just got to stay active and I want to fight again." His comments reflect his determination to bounce back and continue competing at the highest level, despite the challenges he has faced in recent years.
