Sentence for metro attack handed down

A 43-year-old man named Vincent B. was sentenced to 18 months in prison for attacking an 18-year-old woman on a train in Lyon. Eight of those months are suspended, meaning he won’t serve them unless he commits another offense.

Attack occurred on public transport

The incident took place around 11:15 p.m. on October 19 when Vincent B., who was drunk, struck the woman with a strong slap after an argument on the train. Another passenger tried to help the victim but was also hit before assisting her off the train.

Victim suffers ongoing psychological effects

The woman was prescribed eight days of total work incapacity due to the attack, with one day specifically for the fear she felt afterward. She still experiences psychological effects and now avoids using public transport at night.

Vincent B. did not deny the attack

Vincent B. admitted to the attack during the trial and apologized to the victim, who was in court. He said he had consumed two beers and taken his epilepsy medication that night. Police found a baton and spiked gloves in his backpack when he was arrested.

History of similar offenses and alcohol use

Vincent B. has prior convictions for similar attacks and sexual assaults in 2012, 2016, and 2019. His history of alcohol use and aggressive behavior when drinking were key points during the trial. He said he kept the weapons in his backpack due to "fear of the current context."

Court imposes additional restrictions

The court sentenced Vincent B. to 18 months in prison, with eight months suspended, and ordered him to undergo addiction treatment. He is also banned from using public transport and contacting the victim. He must pay 1,500 euros for the victim’s emotional distress and 750 euros for court costs. He may appeal the decision within ten days.
