Kenya's sugar demand outpaces supply

Kenya is among the largest sugar consumers in sub-Saharan Africa, but local production has not kept up with domestic needs. This gap has prompted companies like West Kenya Sugar to seek new investments and expansion opportunities to meet growing demand.

New investment in Nandi county

West Kenya Sugar, owned by the Rai Group, plans to invest 4.2 billion shillings (about 32 million USD) in a new sugar mill in Chesumei, Nandi county. The facility is expected to initially crush 1,500 tonnes of sugarcane daily, with the potential to double that capacity in the future.

Boosting local farmers and operations

The new mill aims to provide additional market opportunities for farmers in Nandi and surrounding areas. The company is working with local growers on more than 30,000 acres of land dedicated to sugarcane cultivation, expanding its reach beyond its traditional regions in western Kenya.

Acquisition of Nzoia mill strengthens position

West Kenya Sugar recently acquired a thirty-year lease on the Nzoia sugar mill and its 3,600-hectare agricultural area. This acquisition, along with the new mill in Nandi, is expected to enhance the company’s industrial capacity and strengthen its relationship with local producers.

Kenya seeks to boost domestic sugar production

Kenya’s sugar supply rose by nearly 22% between January and May 2026, reaching 348,143 tonnes. This increase was supported by a 25.1% rise in cane deliveries to factories, indicating growing production and government efforts to revitalize the sector.

New regulations aim to strengthen the industry

The Sugar Act 2024 has revived the Kenya Sugar Board as a specialized regulator and introduced measures to transfer public sugar mills to private operators under long-term leases. These changes, along with higher taxes on imported sugar, are intended to support local producers and modernize the industry.
