Heather Matarazzo, best known for her role as Lilly Moscovitz in The Princess Diaries, has revealed she is struggling to meet the income requirements needed to qualify for health insurance through SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors and other entertainment professionals. Matarazzo shared her situation on the social media platform Threads, responding to fellow actor Jack Haven, who had gone public with their own financial challenge. Haven, who plays Casey Gardner in Atypical and appeared in the 2024 film I Saw the TV Glow, said they were $4,000 short of the minimum income needed to secure SAG-AFTRA health coverage. Matarazzo said she is “literally in the same boat right now,” adding that many of her peers are facing similar difficulties.
SAG-AFTRA requires actors to either earn at least $28,090 in 2026 or work a minimum of 108 eligible days during the coverage period to qualify for health insurance. These thresholds are expected to rise in the coming years, with the minimum income requirement increasing to $28,933 in 2027. Once an actor meets these criteria, they receive 12 months of health coverage. However, if they fall short, their coverage ends when the benefit period expires. In such cases, actors may have options like COBRA, a federal law that allows them to continue their health insurance coverage for a limited time, though at a higher cost.
Jack Haven’s situation gained attention after they posted a video titled Are You Casting?, in which they asked the entertainment industry to hire them on a SAG-covered production. Haven described their situation as an “emergency” and said they needed to earn $4,000 by the end of September to qualify for coverage starting in January. They listed a range of skills, including singing, dancing, and performing accents, and said they would be willing to take on “pretty much any job” for the opportunity. Their post went viral, and Haven later said they received a large number of offers as a result.
Matarazzo noted that the current system of requiring a minimum income for insurance is relatively new, recalling a time when actors did not have to meet such financial thresholds. Haven’s appeal appears to have had a positive impact, as they reported receiving numerous opportunities after their video circulated online. Matarazzo has had a consistent presence in film and television since her early role in Welcome to the Dollhouse in 1995. She has appeared in The Princess Diaries and its sequel, Scream 3, All I Wanna Do!, and the 2025 short film Paper Tiger, as well as in the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday.
