Justin Baldoni, an actor and producer, is currently involved in a legal dispute with two insurance companies, QBE Insurance Corp. and New York Marine and General Insurance Co., over whether the insurers are obligated to cover legal costs from a lawsuit involving actress Blake Lively. The dispute centers around a 2024 film titled It Ends With Us, in which Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios LLC, are seeking coverage for legal expenses related to Lively’s lawsuit and Baldoni’s countersuit against her. In July 2025, Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios sued the insurers, claiming they breached a contract by failing to defend them against the legal actions stemming from the film. Baldoni’s legal team has asked Judge James I. Montgomery to decide whether QBE had a duty to provide legal defense. They argue that Lively was not an employee of the production, but rather an independent contractor with her own business and creative interests in the movie. This distinction, they say, undermines QBE’s main defense that the lawsuit is employment-related and therefore not covered by the insurance policy. QBE’s legal team has countered that Lively was indeed an employee and that all claims in her lawsuit—regardless of how they are labeled—stem from her employment as the lead actress on the film. They argue that Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios are trying to shift focus by emphasizing claims of retaliation and defamation, rather than acknowledging that the core of the case is rooted in her employment relationship. The legal battle is set to be heard in court on November 10. Earlier in 2023, Lively alleged that Baldoni and others on the film maligned her after she reported on-set sexual harassment. In response, Baldoni filed a $400 million countersuit, claiming her accusations were false and harmed his reputation. That case was dismissed in November 2023, and the two parties reached a settlement in May 2024. The current case focuses on whether the insurance companies must cover the legal costs associated with those disputes.
