Several neighborhoods in Villeurbanne, including Gratte-Ciel, la Soie, Tonkin, Grandclément, and Saint-Jean, are undergoing significant transformations as part of a long-term development plan. On Tuesday, October 6, the city shared updates on key ongoing and upcoming projects. Over seven years, Villeurbanne is investing 350 million euros to modernize its neighborhoods, focusing on housing, public facilities, green spaces, and new tram lines to support its growing population. In the Gratte-Ciel neighborhood, 226 housing units in lot B are expected to be completed by mid-2027, with lots A and C following in 2028. By 2028, the area will also see the opening of a four-screen cinema and a Youth Space. The Contreforts program includes commercial and office spaces, and Place Chanoine-Boursier will be expanded, greened, and partially pedestrianized. The Ariana Hotel is also set for renovation, including a rooftop and a restaurant. Near the downtown and the Doua campus, the Roger-Planchon park will open in spring 2027. Covering two hectares, it will include a 4,300-square-meter walled garden, sports facilities, and green areas, with an investment of 4.3 million euros. In the Tonkin neighborhood, the former clinic site is being transformed, with a municipal library expected to open by the end of 2028. The new headquarters of Handicap International will include a private garden, and Cegid is moving its offices to Stalingrad Boulevard in early 2027. At Grandclément, the N02 program is set to begin this autumn, including 216 housing units and commercial spaces. The T6 and TB12 trams now serve the area, improving connectivity. In Saint-Jean, the Metropolitan Area has launched procedures for a public utility declaration and is planning meetings with residents. The T9 tram will enter service in mid-2027, and the Est Métropole Habitat residence and dyke renovations will start this autumn. At the Buers, the last phases of the Anru program are nearing completion, with new housing and community facilities expected by 2027. In La Soie, the last of the Zac housing units will be delivered, and the Dominique-Mateo sports complex will open this autumn. The T9 tram will begin service in mid-2027, and the future T8 line, connecting La Soie with other areas, is expected to be operational by 2030.
