Chinese companies in the RAM manufacturing sector are growing rapidly, driven by the increasing demand for memory chips fueled by the rise of artificial intelligence. This surge in demand has led to a global shortage of RAM, creating opportunities for new players in the market. Two prominent Chinese companies, CXMT and YMTC, have emerged as significant contenders in the global technology landscape. These firms are positioning themselves for future growth, with CXMT already showing strong potential to rival established players like Micron. To meet the rising demand, CXMT and YMTC plan to place large orders for ASML DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) lithography machines over the next three years. These machines are essential for manufacturing advanced semiconductor chips, and the companies are preparing for a long-term shortage. SK Hynix, a major memory chip producer, has indicated that the RAM shortage could persist until 2030. According to the Financial Times, CXMT and YMTC have already secured a substantial number of DUV machines from ASML, enough to support their development needs for three years. Despite U.S. restrictions that prevent Chinese companies from accessing the most advanced ASML EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) machines, they can still purchase older DUV models. However, these machines are not yet the preferred choice in China, where domestic companies like CXMT and YMTC are leaning toward using ASML equipment for their production needs. Yuliangsheng, another leading local player, aims to produce 12 DUV machines this year. However, its technology is still years away from matching the advanced capabilities of ASML’s machines. Chinese companies face significant technical challenges in developing their own semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Key obstacles include the development of high-quality projection lenses and the creation of stable, high-power light sources. These components are crucial for the precision required in advanced chip manufacturing, making them particularly complex to produce. Overcoming these hurdles will be essential for Chinese firms to fully compete with global leaders in the RAM sector.
