The global shortage of RAM, a crucial component in computers and other electronic devices, has persisted for over a year. Major manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix, two of the world’s largest producers of memory chips, are struggling to keep up with demand. Their current stock levels are extremely low, covering only about 10 days of consumption. This shortage has led to a surge in sales and profits for these companies, as their products are selling out quickly.
RAM, or random access memory, is essential for the operation of computers, smartphones, and other devices that rely on processing data quickly. The shortage is primarily due to the limited production capacity of the three major players in the memory market: Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix. These companies have been unable to produce enough RAM to meet the rising global demand, which has continued to grow despite the ongoing shortage.
The situation is expected to worsen as demand for memory components is projected to increase significantly. According to the investment firm KB Securities, the extremely low stock levels could lead to a more severe shortage, which might disrupt markets further. This is especially concerning as spending on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is expected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2026, representing a 60% increase from current levels. Of that spending, 57% is expected to go toward purchasing memory components, highlighting the critical role RAM plays in the development of AI technologies.
The rising demand and limited supply have also led to increased prices across the tech industry. For example, NVIDIA, a leading manufacturer of graphics processing units (GPUs) used in AI and high-performance computing, has reportedly raised its GPU prices by 20 to 30 percent. This price increase is expected to ripple through the market, affecting not only AI development but also other areas that rely on advanced computing hardware.
