In Control Resonant, the fate of the world hangs in the balance, but that hasn't stopped the employees of the Federal Bureau of Control from filling their days with paperwork. Players of the game, which is the sequel to 2019's Control, often find themselves sifting through reams of documents, memos, and reports—many of which are heavily redacted. These documents, while seemingly mundane, hold crucial information about the game's enemies and can even reveal hidden narratives, including unexpected love stories. One of the most intriguing subplots unfolds within the logs of the FBC's "Threat Assessment Team," a group tasked with documenting dangerous entities. The team includes Rick Patel, who focuses on the Hiss—creatures that seem to be corrupted human beings—and Lydia M.B. McPierce, who deals with mold-related threats and later enemies. Rick is a serious and methodical worker, while Lydia is more irreverent and prone to sarcastic remarks about the mold she studies. Despite their differences, the two characters develop a growing connection through their shared work. In one log, Rick describes the Hiss Transporter—a corrupted city bus that launches drones to attack—as having a "motherly" relationship with the drones. Lydia later critiques this in a separate document about a mold enemy called the Spore Mother, joking that she had to go to therapy to avoid making similar comparisons. In another document, Lydia teases Rick, now calling him "Ricky," about beating him at chess and challenges him to a rematch. While Rick is more reserved in his humor, he often shows affection for Lydia, even referencing her fear of vomit in one of his logs. Rick's vulnerability comes through in a log about a dangerous Hiss variant he nearly encountered. In it, he confesses his fear of dying and expresses a desire to pursue a relationship with Lydia. He writes, "I don't want to go without taking a chance on us, Lydia." Whether Lydia has seen this note is uncertain, as one log is still missing. However, in a late-game document, Lydia adds a cryptic message: "(Hey Ricky, this is out of left field, but if we actually survive this, wanna grab a coffee sometime?)" Beyond the romantic subplot, Resonant is filled with small stories and details that enhance the game's world. Players who take the time to read these documents not only gain a better understanding of how to fight enemies but also become emotionally invested in characters they never actually meet. The game's world is rich with content, from the perspective of an influencer exploring Manhattan to the FBC's ethical missteps, all contributing to the unique and imaginative universe that Remedy has created.
