A Colorado judge raised the bond for Barry Morphew, a murder suspect, from $3 million to $10 million cash only during a court hearing on Tuesday. Morphew was arrested last week by Boulder County Sheriff's deputies on an outstanding warrant from Alamosa County related to his failure to comply with bond conditions. The judge cited Morphew’s potential to commit new offenses while on bond and his apparent disregard for court orders, stating he would not follow the rules if it disrupted his preferred lifestyle. Morphew was taken into custody without incident on September 3 after deputies located him in unincorporated Boulder County. His arrest followed a request by prosecutors to issue a warrant and increase his bond. The judge granted this request, initially setting his bond at $3 million with nationwide extradition. A bond hearing was scheduled for September 8, where Morphew appeared in person, in chains, and wearing a white and orange striped uniform. During that hearing, the judge raised his bond to $10 million cash only. Prosecutors highlighted GPS data showing Morphew violated the terms of his release by leaving his home under a work exception on August 26. Instead of going to work, the data indicated he drove to Denver International Airport. While Morphew’s attorneys suggested he might have been picking up his daughter, prosecutors argued the trip violated his release conditions since he was only allowed to leave for work. Additional GPS and video data showed Morphew visited a steakhouse, a Whole Foods, a liquor store, and later stayed near hotels and a mall in Denver. The court records also revealed that prosecutors were reviewing GPS data from the day of the hit-and-run incident near 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver. Video evidence from that day showed a man later identified as Morphew refusing to provide identification or insurance information after a collision and leaving the scene. Morphew is currently awaiting trial on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He has pleaded not guilty and maintains he did not kill her.
