Toyota unveils electric Hilux with 196 hp and 54 kWh battery, balancing power and off-road capability.
Electric Hilux unveiled
Toyota has introduced an electric version of its popular Hilux pickup truck, marking a significant step in the company's transition to electric vehicles. This new model is part of the ninth-generation Hilux and is designed to maintain the vehicle's rugged and versatile nature while incorporating electric technology.Powertrain and performance
The electric Hilux features a dual-motor system with a combined power output of 196 horsepower. The front motor provides 205 Nm of torque, while the rear motor delivers 268 Nm, ensuring strong performance and maintaining the Hilux's all-wheel drive capabilities.Battery and charging
The vehicle is equipped with a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery, composed of 80 cells arranged in five modules. This battery is protected by a sub-frame and reinforced housing to ensure durability, particularly for off-road use. The battery's placement does not affect the cargo or passenger space.Range and charging times
Toyota claims a WLTP range of 255 to 257 kilometers in mixed driving conditions, with up to 380 kilometers possible in urban settings. The vehicle supports fast charging at up to 125 kW, allowing a charge from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes. Charging via alternating current at 10 kW takes about 6.5 hours to reach 100%.Off-road capabilities
Despite the switch to electric power, the Hilux maintains similar off-road performance to its combustion engine counterpart. It has a wading depth of 700 mm and an approach angle of 29 degrees. However, the ground clearance is slightly reduced to 212 mm compared to 309 mm in thermal versions.Driving modes and terrain adaptability
The electric Hilux includes the Multi-Terrain Select system, offering six driving modes—Rock, Sand, Mud, Dirt, Mogul, and Auto—to adjust traction settings based on terrain. This system helps maintain the Hilux's reputation for versatility in different environments.Payload and towing
The electric Hilux offers a payload capacity of 715 kg and can tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1,600 kg. It has a long wheelbase of 3.08 meters and a total length of 5.32 meters, with leaf spring rear suspensions for improved load handling.Design and interior features
The electric Hilux is only available as a double cab and comes in two trim levels: Legend and Lounge. Inside, it features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch Toyota Smart Connect multimedia screen. It also includes the latest Toyota Safety Sense systems, such as lane keeping assistance and blind spot monitoring, enhancing driver safety and convenience.
