Toyota introduces a micro-hybrid Hilux with a 48V system to boost efficiency without sacrificing performance or off-road capability.
Toyota introduces micro-hybrid Hilux
Toyota has introduced a micro-hybrid version of its Hilux pickup truck, combining a 2.8-liter diesel engine with a 48-volt electric starter-generator system. The system aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while maintaining the truck's performance and utility.Hybrid system functions and design
The light hybrid system assists the internal combustion engine during start-up, acceleration, and deceleration but is not connected to the transmission. A 4.3 Ah battery made of thirteen cells is installed under the rear seats, adding only 7.6 kg to the vehicle's weight without reducing usable space.Performance and power benefits
The starter-generator can provide up to 8.5 kW of additional power, and energy recovered during braking and deceleration is stored in the battery. This helps reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions and allows for a more efficient Stop & Start system with faster and quieter engine restarts.Vehicle specifications and capabilities
The Hilux Hybrid 48V is available only in double cab body style, preserving the work and off-road capabilities of the conventional diesel version. It has a towing capacity of 3.5 tons and a payload capacity exceeding one ton, with a wading depth of 700 mm for off-road use.Driving modes and terrain adaptability
The Hilux Hybrid 48V includes the Multi-Terrain Select function, allowing drivers to choose from several modes such as Mud, Sand, Rock, Dirt, Deep Snow, and Auto to adapt the vehicle's drive settings to different driving conditions.
