Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, an upcoming action-adventure game from Invoke Studios, is set to bring the classic tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) experience into the world of video games. Despite drawing significant inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons, the game's lead, Dominic Guay, emphasized that it will still offer surprises and mysteries even for experienced players. Speaking at Gamescom, Guay highlighted how the game incorporates deep, lesser-known aspects of Dungeons & Dragons, including monsters, spells, and items, as well as its setting in Darkon—a fictional realm located within Ravenloft's Domains of Dread, a well-known part of the Dungeons & Dragons lore. The game promises an open-world experience where players can explore Darkon and uncover its secrets in a way that mirrors traditional Dungeons & Dragons gameplay. Guay noted that this exploration will take "tens of hours," though the game isn't designed to be a 100-hour campaign. He acknowledged that much of the material used in Warlock comes from books and deep dives into Dungeons & Dragons lore, but he stressed that the team wanted to avoid creating a game that felt too familiar to longtime fans. “We don’t want to create a game where if you know Dungeons & Dragons, you’re like, 'Oh, I know everything,'” Guay said. Instead, the developers aim to preserve the sense of discovery and mystery that defines tabletop role-playing games. While players familiar with Ravenloft, another part of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, may recognize some elements, the game is designed to allow newcomers to figure out its world as they play. Guay confirmed that Warlock will include many classic Dungeons & Dragons tropes, such as finding hidden doors or avoiding traps, but these mechanics will be adapted to work in real time without the need for dice rolls or manual calculations. Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is scheduled to launch in 2027 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. The game aims to offer a fresh yet authentic experience that bridges the gap between tabletop role-playing and modern video game design.
