Invoke Studios has confirmed that Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will include a toggleable HUD (heads-up display) and minimal waypoint guidance, according to an interview with studio head Dominic Guay at Gamescom. Guay explained that these features are designed to promote exploration and reduce the "hand-holding" experience often found in open-world role-playing games (RPGs), where players are frequently guided through tutorials or markers. The game's approach aims to give players more freedom to discover the world on their own while still offering support when needed. In the hands-on demo, the minimal HUD was used to avoid overwhelming players with too much information at once. However, Guay mentioned that some HUD elements will be added to help players navigate and manage their characters, with the option to toggle them on or off in the game's settings. This balance between guidance and freedom is a key design philosophy for the team, ensuring players aren't overwhelmed but still have the tools they need. Guay shared that the team initially considered placing many HUD elements in the center of the screen but realized players could be eased into the game with less information upfront. He gave an example of how the game might highlight a specific area on the map to guide players without giving away too many details. This subtle form of guidance is intended to encourage discovery while still offering direction when necessary. Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is set to release in 2027 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. The game is based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system, offering players a digital experience that blends strategy, exploration, and character development.
