Lunel launches anti-incivility campaign with community clean-up and fines for littering, aiming to foster civic responsibility.
Lunel starts anti-uncivil behavior campaign
The city of Lunel has begun its first concrete action under a campaign to address incivilities, as announced by Mayor Paulette Gougeon to the press on October 16. This initiative follows the launch of the city's territorial brand "Lunel J'adooore!" and a series of neighborhood meetings aimed at engaging residents in keeping the city clean.Cleanliness focus on specific streets
The selected area for the campaign was the sector of Rue des Arts and Rue Alphonse Ménard, chosen based on the city's cleanliness indicators. For over an hour, elected officials, technical staff, and partners including Lunel Agglo and SMN met with residents and merchants at Impasse des Arts at 10 a.m.Community engagement and education
The event included cleaning activities, trash collection, and weeding. Residents were also informed about the resources available, the organization of urban cleanliness, and ways to prevent illegal dumping and abandoned waste. Teams engaged directly with residents to discuss the challenges they face in their neighborhood.Strict enforcement of cleanliness rules
The municipality has adopted a zero tolerance policy for illegal dumping, cigarette butts, and dog feces on public roads. Mayor Paulette Gougeon emphasized the polluter-pays principle, ensuring that responsible residents are not unfairly burdened by others' actions. Fines for these offenses have increased, with 1,500 euros for illegal dumping and 750 euros for a cigarette butt or dog feces on public roads.Supporting residents with tools and resources
To complement enforcement, the city has distributed 1,500 pocket ashtrays and installed 26 ashtray poles in strategic locations. It also provides bags for dog feces and new dog waste bins to help residents comply with cleanliness standards.Cultural center supports community effort
The Maison Rousseau, Lunel's cultural and social center, participated in the event, which is expected to be followed by similar initiatives in the coming weeks. Its director, Manuel Cabanillas, praised the collaboration between the center and the municipality, highlighting the value of creating social bonds. The event also showcased the new Guitoune, a mobile cultural initiative that will tour different neighborhoods.
